Many of us leave it too late to invest in a wood burning stove, choosing to purchase at the start of the season when we feel a little chilly in our homes.
It’s the time when we’re looking out of our windows at the drizzle settling on the ground with the evenings drawing in that we think, ‘I must get round to installing that wood burner.’ It’s not the first thing that comes to mind when staring up at blue skies with temperatures soaring, but summer is the time that you need to start thinking about installing your new wood burning stove.
There are a number of reasons for this, but it’s the research, purchase, preparation and installation process that can take a lot longer than you’d anticipate.
You’ll want to take time to make your stove purchase. There’s a variety of modern and traditional models available and a range of colours to choose from – at Arada you can choose from 7 gorgeous colours - so, it’s important to make sure you choose the stove that’s right for your interior.
You should also consider the stove’s environmental impact, we suggest choosing a stove that’s Ecodesign and DEFRA Smoke Exempt, so you know that you’re choosing a stove that’s better for the planet.
There’s a lot to think about, including chimney size and heat output (measured by calculating your room size as so L x W x H multiplied by 14) - we suggest booking an appointment with your local Arada stockist to help with these details. As you can see, there’s an awful lot to think about!
Our retailers are usually incredibly busy at the start of the winter season, so there might be longer wait times for appointments, booking this for the summer will mean you’ll likely be at the beginning of the queue, so you can start your journey to installing a wood burner straight away.
Your new stove must be installed correctly and safely by a professional – this is really important and not something to overlook. If your wood burner or multi-fuel stove is installed by an Arada authorised retailer, your stove will come with a lifetime guarantee on the stove body. There are a limited number of professionally qualified installers, and as with our retailers, they’re very busy during the winter months, with much more availability over the summer.
Don’t forget to book in a sweep before any fitting commences – your chimney will need to be squeaky clean for the installers to do their job, and again they’ll be super busy as soon as the season begins to change, so we advise getting this booked in early.
Your stove area will also need to be prepped! If you’re changing from an open fire, you’ll need a specialist builder to create a suitably-sized aperture, with enough space around the exterior of the stove to comply with building regulations (150mm between the stove’s external surfaces and surrounding walls). You’ll also need a non-combustible hearth with a minimum thickness of 12mm, which can be sourced by either yourself or your builder.
With so much to think about and book in, we advise not leaving the task too late, so that your wood burning stove can be installed ready for you to enjoy from the start of winter.
