Why add a media wall to your home?

A staple in modern abodes, media walls have continued to grow in popularity with many homeowners looking for a suitable feature for their living rooms that can cater to both practicality and style. Unsure whether to add a media wall to your home? Read on to find out more.

What is a media wall?

A media wall is a wall in your living room that has a TV mounted on it. As a media wall consists of a stud wall framework, it means it can serve other functions too and can be personalised to each homeowner and their needs.

The benefits of a media wall

One of the most important advantages of a media wall is their ability to hide all wiring within the wall, resulting in a sleek and contemporary living space with no fussy cables on show. This makes it the perfect fireplace surround for an electric fire which can be recessed into the wall. Our Ellere electric fire comes with the choice of 1-sided, 2-sided or 3-sided built-in fitting options, meaning the fire can be completely inset or you can make a feature of it with one or two sides on display. Adding a media wall is a great way to add character to a modern home, which often don’t have period features such as a chimney breast. Some homeowners integrate storage within the media wall or either side of the wall with the addition of built-in shelving and cupboards.

Can you install a fire in a media wall?

Yes, electric fireplaces are the perfect option for a media wall, as due to their lower heat output, there are no adverse effects to your TV, but it will still offer plenty of heat to create a cosy and welcoming living room. Most electric fires are designed to be recessed in a media wall, resulting in a sleek and flush front surface.

Do you need a chimney for a media wall?

No – although media walls can be created from an existing chimney, most modern homes are built without fireplaces, so homeowners are creating bespoke media walls in their living room using a simple framework to replicate the features of a chimney breast.

Interested to hear about media wall installation and electric fires from one of our customers?

Alison Chadwick from @thechadwick.home is here to share her thoughts:

Is it easy to install an electric fire?

“The installation process was quick and easy thanks to the helpful instruction manual which is supplied with the fire, and we were able to build the surround and assemble everything in no time at all.”

What steps did you take to install your Ellere Electric Fire?

“We started by researching what style of fireplace would suit our living room. Originally, the front room was much larger, however we turned it into a smaller snug room by adding a partition wall. We weren’t able to fill the wall with a floor-to-ceiling media wall as I felt it would close off the room, but we didn’t want to compromise on style, so adding a slim fireplace like the Ellere made the best use of the space we had to offer.

The easy-to-follow installation guide provided meant that measuring and building the fireplace was easy. We built the fireplace surround using timber and plywood and seeing as we’d never attempted anything like this before, we were very surprised just how easy and straight forward we found the entire process from planning to the installation. Once the surround and fireplace were secured, it is simply a case of plugging it in and it’s ready to go.”

Is an electric fire easy to use?

“Yes, the easy-to-use digital remote control means the fire is easy to switch on and off, as well as change the different settings and it even allows you to set timers. You can also control the fire using the buttons which are discreetly positioned on the front of the fire.”
