How to Decorate Your Mantelpiece this Season

A mantelpiece is often the focal point in a living room as it perfectly frames a fireplace and is often in the centre of the space.

To create a cohesive style in your home, ensure your mantelpiece is not forgotten about and use it as an opportunity to be creative. Whether you prefer a calmer and more pared-back scheme, or you love to combine colours and texture, mantelpieces are extremely versatile – so here are our tips on how to style your space

Keep it simple with foliage

If you’re lucky enough to have traditional period features in your home, such as an original mantelpiece above your fireplace, allow the mantelpiece to do the talking and simple decorate with foliage for a clean, minimalist look. Adding a plant to the centre creates a sense of symmetry which sits beautifully in front of a mirror or piece of artwork, whilst adding a gentle pop of colour to a more neutral scheme.

Add interest with texture

Mantelpieces can often be subtle nods to your décor, so rather than overcrowding your mantelpiece, keep it simple but striking with a wood mantel paired with textured pieces such as dried branches, fired ceramics and other natural materials. Layering these pieces together will bring a warm and homely comfort to your scheme, whilst still being simple and pared-back.

Colour Clashing Maximalism

If you prefer a colourful interior, then decorate your mantelpiece with beautifully bold and extravagant décor pieces. Complement a dark green mantelpiece with matching botanical wallpaper and colourful accessories in purple, yellow and gold tones – instantly adding interest to the space. No maximalist fan would be complete without a bold stove, so incorporate a Raincoat stove for a serious dopamine hit.

No mantelpiece? No problem!

If your fireplace doesn’t have a mantelpiece, but you’re still hoping to highlight it within the space, use your hearth and the surrounding floor space to make an impact – whilst still ensuring decorative pieces are far enough away from the heat! Ideal for positioning a pile of books, plants or decorative objects like vases, a few simple accessories can still make your fireplace pop.
